64 years and counting

In the Black Hills of South Dakota, not far from Mount Rushmore, is a different kind of memorial. It’s a sculpture already 64 years in the making, commissioned by Henry Standing Bear. It honors Crazy Horse, the great Lakota warrior who led the victory at Little Big Horn.

The memorial is not without controversy, and one can’t avoid the irony of blasting a beautiful natural landscape with dynamite in tribute. It’s amazing and beautiful to look at, but also very sad. I was glad that we skipped the presidential heads at Mount Rushmore entirely.
